Cost of Stamped Concrete

The cost of stamped concrete will depend on many factors, each job is unique and local conditions also have a large bearing on the final cost.

Here are a few items that will affect the cost of the installation

  • Cost of Concrete: this is one of the main factors that affect the cost of stamped concrete, over the last few years concrete cost has sky rocketed reaching almost $ 200.00 per yard in some markets.
  • Method of coloring: Integral color or color hardeners. Integral colors are more expensive but color throughout the thickness of the slab, color hardeners provide better surface protection and lighter colors.
  • Size of the job: The larger the job the lower the cost per square foot price will be for stamped concrete. On smaller jobs square foot price is not applicable and most contractors will charge a fee based on minimum charges.
  • What the job entails: How complicated is the installation, how many colors, patterns, etc.
  • Preparation: Is it a driveway, patio, easy access,. on a slope, removal of asphalt or concrete, will it require fill, etc.
  • Time Frame: Is it a rush job, is there plenty of time for the installation?
  • Cost of permit.

Stamped concrete basics:

Preparation: This will include removal of concrete, asphalt or dirt, digging, filler, forming and reinforcement (rebar, wire mesh or fibers).

Pouring: Minimum depth of pour is 4" and up to 6", one yard of concrete yields 80 square feet at 4" and 54 at 6". The concrete is poured and smoothed out with straight edges then bull floated, once the concrete is ready a dry shake color hardener is broadcast on the surface, this step is skipped if integral color is used.

Stamping: After the concrete is set enough to support someone's weight a powder release is broadcast on the surface and the stamps are placed on top of the release. The workers then walk on the stamps pressing them down to texture the concrete. More than one pattern may be used to create borders or circles.

Sealing: The new slab needs to be allow to dry for a few days then the released is washed to expose the underlying color, some of the release color will stay in and it will give a secondary antiquing color. After the concrete is washed and dry a minimum of two coats of sealer are applied to protect and enhance.
